Additional Information

Mail-in applications will not be accepted. Successful applicants will receive information about mandatory attendance at a 2008 moose hunt orientation session.

Zone boundary changes in 2007 place all zones completely in or out of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA). Travel in zones within the BWCA is limited to foot and/or non-motorized watercraft and no motorized or mechanical equipment, including ATVs, may be used.

Hunting parties must apply for the permit. Number of hunters in a party can range from two to four. Moose permits are a once-in-a-lifetime license. Hunters who have received a moose permit in any year from 1991 to the present, whether or not the hunt was successful, are not eligible to apply.

The DNR recommends that only experienced big game hunters apply for these permits and that succussful applicants become knowledgeable about hunting regulations, zone boundaries, private land restrictions, conditions in the area they intend to hunt and equipment required. A crucial part of any hunt strategy is to develop a means of handling the animal once taken.

Extreme measures should be taken to prevent merely wounding and, as a result, losing the animal. Obtaining a permit to take a moose carries a privilege to be a hunter of this highest standards and knowledge.
